2024 ARCA race at Elko Speedway

 William Sawalich wins an epic race in the ARCA Menards series at Elko Speedway, he won an exciting 3 way battle for the top spot.  The margin of victory was 0.011 seconds, the second closest race in ARCA History.  

Jason and Dean did a new episode of Speed Talk discussing this race and adding some insider info, also included local racing at ELKO and IndyCar racing at Iowa Speedway.

Fathers Day Double at Iowa Speedway

Due to the cancellation, because of rain, of the Gander Outdoors Truck series event on Saturday, it was instead raced on Fathers day at Iowa Speedway.  Ross Chastain #44 crossed the finish line first at the M&Ms 200 and went through all the victory lane celebration but was later Disqualified in post-race inspection for being too low in the front giving second place finisher #24 Brett Moffitt the win.  This is the first time a win has been taken away in modern NASCAR history, the winner Moffitt never led a lap in the race.

BOTH winners of the race signed this die-cast toy for a sponsor, Ross Chastain signed on the roof and Brett Moffitt signed it on the hood.

Iowa Speedway was part of the Triple Truck Challenge, a three race series-in-a-series.

The drivers who have elected to run for points in the series were eligible for an additional $50,000 bonus above the normal purse money.

The money was on display in the Media Room.

Former ELKO ARCA winners Brennan Poole finished 11th, Gus Dean 20th, ELKO pole winners Grant Enfinger was 4th and Riley Herbst 15th.  Elko Speedway Great North Legends driver Rob Thurston and his business Thurston Inc seed brokerage helped sponsor the car #97 driven by Jesse Little (below), he finished 22nd.  Here is our post-race interview with Little Jesse Little interview

The late afternoon race of the Fathers day double was the Circuit City 250 in the NASCAR Xfinity series.  Cole Custer started the race from the pole and finished second, Cole Custer Interview.  Christopher Bell won the race in dominating fashion (photo above).

Iowa Speedway Opening Weekend 2018 RECAP

Justin Allgaier #7 won the 8th annual Iowa 250 presented by Enogen NASCAR Xfinity series race at Iowa Speedway.  The entire race was really a dog fight from beginning to end, the lead was swapped numerous times but Allgaier led 182 of the 250 lap event.  "It was a fun day and Cole (Custer) and the other guys all raced me clean, we performed well today," said Allgaier after the race.  Christopher Bell #20 had a fast car all race long, he took the lead two times, but was immediately passed back by Allgaier both times.

Bell finished second place, he started the race at the back of the field after failing tech and not attempting a lap in qualifying. Daniel Hemric #21 finished third and led two laps, #00 Cole Custer had a strong car and led two laps as well he finished fourth, #19 Brandon Jones finished a strong fifth place finish.  Here is our post-race interview Brandon Jones (photo below with Jason Searcy)

"The hot and slick track conditions made for great racing, plus the talent in this series is incredible" said Iowa 250 winner Justin Allgaier.  Former Iowa Speedway winner Elliott Sadler #1 Brushed the wall in the first segment and fell back he eventually finished 28th place.

Ty Majeski #60 had a career best 7th place finish in the #60, here is our interview with him post-race Ty Majeski.  Majeski said he was happy to finally get a good run with his Roush team, he also said it was nice to have his Late Model guys in attendance watching him race.

Kaz Grala finished 10th in the 61 car, here is our exclusive interview with him Kaz Grala in what could be his final race in the Xfinity series because of a lack of sponsorship.

Helio Castroneves silences the rumors and wins Iowa Corn 300

Rumors swirled this week that it might be the final year of racing for Team Penske in IndyCar for Helio Castroneves, he silenced those rumors and ended his long winless drought of 1,134 days on Sunday July 9th 2017 by winning the Iowa Corn 300 at Iowa Speedway.  It was his 30th career win. He led 217 laps (out of 300) in the race and now is fourth all-time in laps led with 5,947.  The media was instructed not to ask Helio about his upcoming contract in the post-race press conference, we were told that all questions should be addressed to Team Penske and at this time they have no comment.

Ryan Hunter-Reay (photo above) is a three time winner of this race, he started 15th on the grid and drove his way up to third.  The race was Red Flagged for a very brief time on lap 208 for Rain.  It also was very hot with air temperatures in the 90's and track temperatures above 130 degrees.

Will Power (photo above) started the race on the Pole, led the race three different times for 23 laps but dropped back after the last caution period and finished fourth.

Graham Rahal (above) finished the race in the fifth position 10.1811 seconds behind the leader.  2016 race winner Josef Newgarden started the race 16th and finished 6th.

Kids Q & A at Iowa Speedway

Iowa Speedway held a Kids Q & A Session preceding the Iowa Corn 300 for the Verizon IndyCar Series.  It was held at the Crash Course located under the Main Grandstand.  IndyCar driver Ed Carpenter was the celebrity guest and kids were given the opportunity to ask questions, just like the professional media.

Here are some of the interesting Kids Questions that were asked-with a summary of the answer.

Q:  How does it feel to go Airborn?
A:  It is very Quiet.

Q:  Did you watch racing when you were little?
A:  Yes, I was always a big IndyCar fan growing up.

Q:  How long does it take for you to get into the car?
A:  We have a maximum of 6 minutes when it is announced for drivers to do so but, it usually only takes me about 3-4 minutes.

Q:  How does it feel when you need to go to the Bathroom?
A:  I was waiting for that one!  It's just like when you go on a long road trip with your parents, you have to   go to the bathroom before the race and if you don't you just have to hold it.  But we sweat out a lot in the car so it usually isn't a problem

Just like working media, the kids were not allowed to take photos with the driver or get autographs but the parents were allowed to take a group photo at the end.

Iowa Corn 300 IndyCar Iowa Speedway preview

The Iowa Corn 300 IndyCar race at Iowa Speedway is coming up today with green flag scheduled for 4:40pm.  The race will be televised on NBCSN beginning at 4pm (CDT).

Will Power #12 was the fast qualifier with a lap time of 17.3612 seconds, average speed of 185.210 mph on the 7/8th Oval at Iowa Speedway located in Newton (IA).

Erik Jones Wins U.S. Cellular 250 at Iowa Speedway

Erik Jones proved that he was the driver to beat as he won the NASCAR Xfinity Series U.S. Cellular 250 at Iowa Speedway.  Jones took the lead on the start as he and polesitter Daniel Suarez set a quick pace.  A competition yellow was waved on lap 40 so that track workers could inspect a patch made to the race track in turns three and four.  However Jones continued to show the way after yellow flag pit stops cycled through.

All of the Joe Gibbs teams used pit crews with little or no experience working together, since this was a standalone NASCAR event.  Several of the other teams brought their Sprint Cup crews to service the cars and it allowed for some changes up front.

Elliot Sadler would win the race the race off of pit road and briefly took over out front leading laps 117-125 before Jones again took over the lead.  Ty Dillon also used quick pit work to take the lead during the final round of pit stops on lap 152.  Jones would use the long green flag stretch to track down Dillon in the closing laps, before taking over the lead with 15 laps remaining.

Jones would end the day leading on 4 different occasions for 154 laps.

Dillon appeared to be one of the few that could race with Jones, his lone stint out front yielded 83 laps in the lead, but that would only be good enough for second place.

Sadler only led once for only 9 laps, but he was satisfied with the third place finish.

Dakoda Armstrong filling in for Matt Tifft, pulled off a pass on the final lap, to move past Sam Hornish Jr. to finish an impressive 5th.

The biggest disappointment of the race was pole sitter Suarez who was running near the front, but a slow final pit stop shuffled him back for the final restart.  When the green waved Josh Berry who was restarting just ahead of Suarez missed a shift causing Suarez to run into the back of Berry's car.  The front end damage to Suarez's ended up causing engine failure and he retired from the race on lap 174. 


Suarez's misfortune and Sadler's third place run created a change atop the NASCAR Xfinity Point Standings as Sadler now leads Suarez by 14 points.
