Viking Speedway Ice Breaker cancelled

** update 4/18/12
Central Minnesota Icebreaker Rescheduled

The Central Minnesota Icebreaker at Viking Speedway in Alexandria, MN has been postponed one week due to heavy rains and snow this past weekend, more rain last night and even more in the forecast leading up to and during the upcoming weekend.

The event will be held on April 26th, 27th and 28th, with a practice on Thursday night from 6p-9p and then racing on Friday at 6 and Saturday 3pm.

The inaugural Central Minnesota Icebreaker has regrettably been cancelled due to wet grounds, snow, cold temperatures and the forecast of rain for much of the weekend. The event will not be rescheduled this season, but will be held in April of 2012.

As of mid-day on Wednesday, the forecast calls for below average temperatures and more rain/snow showers to fall in the Alexandria area over the next few days, therefore the decision has been made to cancel the show for this upcoming weekend.

Event promoter Chris Stepan said ‘Just like the last two weeks, the weather has been just terrible over the past couple of days and even though the temperatures and weather forecast looks decent for tomorrow and Friday, the grounds and race track are still very wet and with the forecasted rain over the next day likely, we just don’t see any way of getting the track and grounds ready for even a Saturday/Sunday or Sunday only event and I certainly don’t want to get everyone here to Alex and then be forced to pull the plug because we can’t get it on once everyone’s already here.’

Stepan also said ‘After discussing this with Phil, the other Viking board members and the track prep crew at Viking for quite some time over the past three days and throughout the morning today, we came to a consensus that with the wetness of the facility, the forecast for more rain and snow tonight and the cold temperatures and snow that is expected through Friday, that the best thing to do would be to postpone the event until next spring.’

Although the forecast for the race isn’t great, it looks like the weather is going to improve enough throughout the day Thursday to dry the facility, and the forecast for Friday is forecasted to be in the mid-60’s and sunny, so we have decided to run an open practice session on Friday night from 5:30pm-10:00pm for anyone who wants to come and get some laps to open up the 2011 season. Pit gates will open at 3:00pm and practice will get underway at 5:30. Car/driver pit passes will be $25, pit crew and all other pit passes will be $10 for everyone else and the grandstands will be free.

Intro to Go-Karting

The first annual kids "Intro to Go-Karting" event will be taking place Saturday April 30th at Stockholm Motorsports Park in Cokato (MN).

This is a good opportunity to find out if you child shows the desire and interest it takes to become a Go-Kart racer.   They will be given an expert introduction to the sport and the Karts and then will be taking to the track to see how they like it.

The cost for this event is only $25, and they money is refundable twords a membership to the (NRKA) Northern Region Karting Association, if you so choose.

The Stockholm Motorsports Park is an elite Go-Kart facility... its an asphalt road course track, about 6/10th of a mile, 14 turns, 26 foot wide and numerous elevation changes.  A nice mix of a speed and technical course.

This event is split into two different classes:  5-7 yr olds from 11am-1pm and 8-12 yr olds from 1:30pm-3:30pm.  Your child does not need anything special for this class, just wear jeans and tennis shoes.  Helmets and other materials are all provided.

Hideaway Speedway ready for 2011

Hideaway Speedway is an awesome track just South of Isanti (MN).

This track races RC (radio controlled) cars at crazy speeds around this 1/10th mile high banked asphalt track.  When watching the races up close, the cars are just a blur as they race side by side at speeds nearing 50mph.  They also do full pit stops for fuel on the pit lane (photo above).

Dean and I had the opportunity to announce the races at Hideaway in the fall of 2010, we had a great time and throughly enjoyed the races.  Here is a link to the youtube video of winner Roger Newell
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6O3jiZEgWM

This facility also includes a building that holds thousands of die-cast cars for sale and the National QSAC 1/4 scale museum and a TQ (3/4 scale) car racing museum with tons of pictures, displays and cars on display.

The Hideaway Speedway will have racing EVERY OTHER Saturday, all summer long, beginning May 7th.  The race time has been changed to Saturdays at 12 NOON, instead of Saturday evenings, to encourage a larger crowd and higher car counts.  FREE Admission for all spectators in 2011.

Weather NOT cooperating in MN

This from Elko (MN) Speedway..

"Due to the weather forecast Friday and Saturday, we have decided to postpone the Spring Dirt Nationals. If you already purchased your tickets, they will be good for Summer Dirt Nationals July 14, 15 & 16. Our next scheduled event besides next weekends test n' tune is April 30 Eve of Destruction RAW!"

This is a big disappointment for the racers, fans and track.  The weather forecast is for rain, turning to sleet, turning to snow... so its probably the right decision.

Its really too bad they wont get to race on the dirt at Elko Speedway until Mid-Summer.

The Openers at Oglivie (MN) Raceway and Cedar Lake (WI) Speedway have also been cancelled this weekend due to the weather.
