Elko Speedway racer Matt Goede recovering from injury

By Jason D Searcy

March 1, 2017

Things were going great for #28 Matt Goede in 2016, he just bought a house in Carver (MN) and at the age of 28 he was ascending to the peak of his racing career.  In auto racing he finished second place to his brother #72 Jacob Goede in the Premiere division at Elko Speedway for the second consecutive year.  In snowmobile racing he had just won his third Vintage World Championship in Eagle River (WI) and moved up to the Elite TLR Cup Tour Championship Ice Oval racing circuit.  The first week out he shocked many people by finishing second place to Cardell Potter in Fargo (ND), confidence was at an all-time high. Then the calendar turned to 2017 and Matt's life changed forever.

On January 8th while racing in Ironwood (MI) Matt's sled had mechanical problems causing him to slow dramatically coming out of turn number four, with the whole field bearing down on him.  His sled was hit, he slid off and then he was struck by another sled going 80+ mph.  He sustained catastrophic injuries including:  Shattered Kneecap, Broken Pelvis in three places, Dislocated Elbow, Three Broken Toes, Broken Foot and if that is not enough he had Compound Fractures (that means bones poking through the skin) in his Lower Leg, Upper Leg and Arm.

"I was awake the whole time," said Goede "I was aware of what was going on but I was in a lot of pain."  He was transferred to a hospital in Wausau (WI) and then the news started to get out to the racing community.  Prayers were sent over social media and Adam Brachle, the track chaplain at Elko Speedway, rushed to the hospital.  "It was great to see Adam, nice to see a familiar face, I'm glad he was there for my dad and everybody," said Goede.

Shortly thereafter a GoFundMe page was set up to help Matt with his medical expenses, the Goal was to raise $15,000.  The response on Facebook was immediate and impressive, that page has been shared 3,100 times and 282 people donated a total of $32,885... so far.  "I can't thank everyone enough for the support and donations, when things go bad, I guess that is when you find out who your friends really are" said Goede. "I'm not really an outgoing person, so for all those people to show their support is really cool."

Matt's father John Goede also raised $10,000 by donating the sled that Jacob rode to a Vintage World Championship in 2006 and 2011 to a Charity auction.  That $10,000 was donated to Blaine Stephenson, who was also injured in the Ironwood race, and Gavin Bihner, who was injured in a race on New Years Eve.

Matt is back home and on his way to recovery now, but there is a long way to go.  He is still in a wheelchair and can't put any weight on his right side.  "Pretty much all I can do is sit in my wheelchair and watch TV all day long," said Matt "This injury sucks but I'm glad to be here, it could've been much worse."  Matt is hoping to be able to walk by May so he can get back to the racetrack, "I want to be at the track every week, my brother (Jacob) plans on racing Elko Speedway and I'm looking forward to watching" said Goede.

Matt is not giving up on racing himself on asphalt or ice, but that is quite a ways off, right now he is just thankful to be alive and looking forward to flipping the calendar to 2018.

Driver interviews at Raceway Park from 2012

Jason Searcy did some interviews with drivers at Raceway Park in Shakopee (MN) in 2012 that were broadcast on KRWC 1360 AM radio in Buffalo MN.  The purpose of these interviews was to expose the drivers personalities to the general public, so these segments were not played during the Speed Talk on 1360 show, instead they were sprinkled into the regular daily programming on KRWC.

Mark Bronstad and Big Kids Racing was the sponsor of this segment along with Raceway Park, before its untimely closing in 2013.

Here are the links to all the segments on the Speed Talk on 1360 SoundCloud page.

Ryan Anderson ushers in a new era of Monster Jam

By Jason D Searcy

December 10, 2016

Dennis Anderson driving Grave Digger has been the King of Monster Jam throughout the entire Metrodome era.  That era is over and his son, Son-Uva Digger driver Ryan Anderson, has taken over the crown in a very non-traditional way at the new US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis (MN), he is just as much as an acrobat as a driver.

Ryan Anderson (above on right) absolutely thrilled the sold-out crowd with a display of two-wheeling tricks and totally intentional near wrecks.  The moves Anderson displayed looked more like something a BMX biker or a Freestyle Motocross racer would attempt.  He rode the corner on his two side wheels and even clipped a jump just with with his rear tire to create another unexpected move.  He won the Freestyle and nobody in the crowd even noticed he never attempted the back-flip.

Freestyle Judging Results:

Son-Uva Digger       36
Lucas Oil Crusader  35
FS1 Cleatus             34
Max D                     32
Hot Wheels              29
Monster Energy       28
Grave Digger           28
Mad Scientist          26
Scooby Doo            26
Zombie                    24
El Toro Loco            24
Thunder 4x4             21
Mohawk Warrior      15
Black OPS               12

While many of the drivers stuck to the conventional but Ryan Anderson just took Monster Jam to the next level in Freestyle a new era fitting for the new billion dollar stadium in Minnesota.  Linsey Weenk (below) in Lucas Oil Crusader almost swept the night, he did a great job in freestyle and stood up the truck after doing the back-flip.

Linsey Weenk in Lucas Oil Crusader won racing over Damon Bradshaw in Monster Energy by a mark of 18.629 to 18.831.

Becky McDonough (above) from Brainerd (MN) driving El Toro Loco did a great job in winning the Wheelie Contest after standing her truck up on the tailgate, shoving the truck in reverse and making a great save.

Veteran driver Madusa (above), also originally from Minnesota, spoke on camera before the event, she was injured and unable to race this weekend but she thanked the crowd and hoped that her career has inspired some young female racers.

A founding father of the sport, Everett Jasmer from Ham Lake (MN) was also in attendance, he was introduced to the crowd and displayed his USA-1 Monster Truck, one of the first Monster Trucks to catch the eye of the public back in the 1980's.

The event started at 7:11pm and ended at 9:26pm.

Another Monster Jam show will be held Sunday afternoon at 3:30pm, tickets are still available.

It was also announced that another Monster Jam show will be held at US Bank Stadium on Saturday night February 11th, 2017.

A Powerful Tool That Is'nt In Your Toolbox

By Dean Reller
Thousands of years ago, man invented fire.  It’s said that later that day, he invented barbecue.  Fire, while feared at the racetrack, is a valuable tool that we overlook its value.  We cook, build, manufacture and control with it to make nearly everything we have.  Conversely, we destroy, dismantle, burn or injure things with it as well.  Controlled, it is one of the greatest tools that mankind has.  Uncontrolled, it can be one of the most destructive things we’ve ever discovered.
Flash forward in time and we have something not quite as spectacular, but a very similar type of tool that mankind has created.  It’s called Social Media.  That comes in several different forms, but can be used to create as well as destroy.  The only problem with this tool is the successes or failures aren’t as immediately visible.  As a race promoter, that being a track, driver or fan, it is one of the greatest things to come along in years.  The ability to interact is immediate.  A person can find out not only who won, but can see pictures and videos just seconds after it happens.  People can congratulate, thank and celebrate great moments in a person’s life very freely.  Racetracks and teams can use this positive engagement to promote races and race teams can generate excitement and build fan bases.  Not really thought of as a tool, like a wrench or a screwdriver, it’s very important for racing and its value is literally, virtually un-measurable.
However, the flip side of the coin and like that of fire, social media has the ability to destroy and dismantle.  Negative thoughts and comments on social media can be very destructive causing damage that could also be virtually un-measurable.  Recently, it was reported that negative fallout due to social media, partially contributed to a racetrack’s failure.  Although there was more than one factor that was to blame, it was certainly an eye opening moment that some thoughts and comments posted through social media could do that.  A bad night at the racetrack happens.  Things break, stupid things happen and once in a while it seems that everyone is out to get you.  As a race official and media member over the years, I can personally attest that you sometimes have one of those nights where you wished it rained and you could just go home.  Fortunately, those days are few and far between and the good days always outnumber the bad.
I’m not advocating people to just post positive only comments, but I caution everyone to consider choosing their words carefully.  Comments posted are virtual, but the people who read them are human.  One character flaw to humans is that we make mistakes.  In retrospect, a split second decision that happens during a race happens all the time.  There are no do-overs or replays, it happens and it happens quickly.  Comments and reactions are equally as quick and social media magnifies them.  So I caution people to take a breath before posting critical comments.  Much like that other tool (fire), let’s use social media to light the way and not get burned.

By Jason D Searcy
September 24, 2016 - Elko, MN

Danny Fredrickson from Lakeville (MN) was presented with his fifth guitar trophy as winner of the Thunderstruck93 memorial race at Elko Speedway in honor of Dan Ryan and benefiting the "a race worth winning" organization that supports families in their fight with A.L.S.

Under cloudy skies and rain looking imminent the ARCA Midwest Tour race was shortened to 93 laps before it began.  Midwest tour point leader and two time defending Champion Ty Majeski #91 broke a rear end in his primary car during practice and had to switch to a back up car, he still was the fast qualifier with a time of 13.736, and started the race 13th.  Rookie Super Late Model driver Chris Marek #3 started from the pole position, fought back former Midwest tour Champion #77 Jonathan Eilen and then led the first twenty laps.
Danny Fredrickson #36 is a three time Midwest tour Champion himself and also an Elko Speedway Champion in 2003.  Fredrickson started the race 7th and quickly moved to the front of the field, he grabbed the lead at lap twenty and took off as Majeski and three time Elko Speedway Champ #72 Jacob Goede were making their way through this star studded field of Super Late Models.
On lap sixty Fredrickson had a big lead and Majeski had made his way up to second place.  Then with twenty to go Fredrickson caught some faster cars at the tail end of the lead lap and Majeski was right on his back bumper.  These two titans fought it out until the end with Fredrickson finishing just ahead of Majeski, the margin of victory was only .182 seconds with Goede finishing third.  The TOP 3 Podium was the same three drivers as last year, only this year Fredrickson came out on top.
It was the fifth win of the eight Thunderstruck93 events for Fredrickson who celebrated with the Ryan Family in Elko victory lane.  Fourteen of the 27 cars finished on the lead lap.  Only three drivers have competed in all 8 Thunderstruck events, they are Fredrickson, Nick Murgic and Joel Theisen.

The Big 8 Late Model Series ran a 58 lap race during Thunderstruck93 and it was an epic battle between #2 Michael Bilderback from South Beloit (IL) and Michael Ostdiek from Lakeville (MN).
J Herbst #82 a former La Crosse Speedway Champion from West Salem (WI) actually had the field covered the first half of the race before mechanical problems dropped him from the top spot on lap 34.  That's when former Big 8 series Champion and Rockford (IL) Speedway Champion #2 Bilderback took the lead, he was closely followed by #18 Michael Ostdiek who has had an incredible season at Elko, winning four features and finishing third in the National NASCAR Whelen All American Series point standings for Division II.
These two raced hard and had some contact, more than once, on the final lap.  It was an incredible run to the checkers with Bilderback crossing the finish line just .018 seconds ahead of Ostdiek for the win.

Jeremy Wolff won a Hobby Stock Championship at Raceway Park in Shakopee (MN) in 2008, this is just his third full season racing at Elko, he had finished second in points the previous two years before scoring five wins and winning the Championship this year.  Wolff finished 31 points ahead of Kane in the race for the title, Eric Campbell was third in points followed by #07 Dillon Sellner in fourth and #3 Conrad Jorgenson fifth.
Joey Prusak #6 from Minnetonka (MN) won the final Pepsi Power Stock main event of 2016, it was his third win of the season.  Former Champion #88 Nick Oxborough finished second .457 behind Prusak, #54 Tim Hollen was a strong third with #8 Taylor Goldman finishing fourth and #62 Tom Doten from St Paul (MN) rounding out the TOP 5.
It is very appropriate that Tom Doten would score another TOP 5 finish in the last race, it is his specialty, he scored 17 TOP 5 finishes in 24 races this season, the most of any driver in the division and that helped him secure his first career Elko Speedway Championship.
Rookie driver Bryce Blohm #37 from Lakeville (MN) had a great season, he scored five wins and was in the hunt for the title right up until the very end.  Blohm was only eight points behind Doten coming into the final feature but had some bad luck with a flat tire during the race, he finished 17th.
Doten wins the Power Stock Championship by 25 points over Blohm with #7 Brandon Petersen finishing third, Taylor Goldman #8 fourth and #6 Joey Prusak fifth in points.
Double features were raced at Elko Speedway during Thunderstruck93.  The first 20 lap race was as close as it gets, #4 Brady Fox-Rhode from Loretto (MN) won his third feature of the year just edging #13 Tim Brockhouse by a bumper at the line with #71 Derek Lemke just a whisker behind.  Cole Klein #8 finished fourth in the first feature with #16 Matt Allen wrapping up the TOP 5.
In the second nineteen car feature Derek Lemke from Shakopee (MN) was the winner, it was his seventh win this year at Elko Speedway.  Matt Berlin #16 from Mequon (WI) finished second with #4 Brady Fox-Rhode third, #13 Tim Brockhouse fourth and #26 Will McCully in fifth.
The Great North Legends are one of the most exciting divisions at Elko Speedway with intense side by side action every race.  The Great North Legends are the premier division on the last night of racing at Elko Speedway next Saturday night October 1st as they will crown a Champion.  Derek Lemke has an impressive 90 point lead going into that final night, as long as he starts he will win his third consecutive Championship at Elko Speedway.
Justin Schelitzche #14 from Lester Prairie (MN) won the Hornets main event.  Schelitzche outran #36 Brandon Olson for his fourth win of the season at Elko.  Olson finished second followed by #7 Ridge Oien who was in a close battle with #55 Brandon Plekkenpol in fourth and #36 Alex Vincent in fifth.
Schelitzche now has a 27 point lead over Olson going into the final night of racing at Elko Speedway.
