2012 MN race season recap

The 2012 race season was an eventful one for Minnesota race fans.

The ASA Midwest tour raced twice at Elko Speedway, in the August Governors Cup race Travis Sauter won followed by Haseleu and Holtzhausen.  They came back again in September for the Thunderstruck 93 race.  It was an epic battle which saw Dan Fredrickson run Jacob Goede up the track in the last corner for the win, eventual ASA Midwest tour Champion Jonathan Eilen finished third.  They also raced at Iowa Speedway and Brent Kirchner won over Wimmer and Chris Weinkauf.  We interviewed 8 drivers and ASA Midwest tour president Tim Olson on Speed Talk on 1360.

The ARCA series made its first ever trip to Minnesota in June, a really nice crowd at Elko Speedway (above) saw Brennan Poole win.  This race program was well organized, they did live pit stops and the entire 200 laps was run in under 90 minutes.  We interviewed four ARCA drivers and MN ARCA owner Nate Theisse on the show.

In May the NASCAR K&N series appeared for the first time on the 2.5 mile road course at Brainerd International Raceway.  19 cars raced and RCR Developmental driver Michael Self (photo above) won coming from way back in the pack to pass 16 yr old Dylan Kwasniewski coming to the white flag lap.  We interviewed 7 drivers from the track on Speed Talk radio.

The Trans-Am series did a double header at the BIR road course over Labor Day weekend.  17 Cars raced and the TA2 series seems to be a growing division.  MN born racer Tony Ave won his 4th consecutive BIR race on Saturday and Amy Ruman (photo above) won on Sunday.  We interviewed 6 drivers and Trans-Am president John Clagett on Speed Talk.

Iowa Speedway hosted two NASCAR Nationwide races, Ricky Stenhouse dominated the May race and Elliott Sadler (bottom) won the August race.

The Camping World Truck series raced at Iowa twice, Timothy Peters won the first race and 18 yr old Ryan Blaney (below) joined us on the show, the next day he became the youngest ever winner in the truck series.

The IZOD Indy Car series raced at Iowa and it was Ryan Hunter-Reay who won the race that was delayed by rain and did not begin until 9:40pm.  We had the honor of talking to Dario Franchitti's wife Ashley Judd (photo below) during the broadcast.
