Goede wins 7th at Elko Speedway

Elko, MN - July 11, 2015

 #72 Jacob Goede from New Germany (MN) is on an incredible roll at Elko Speedway, winning for the 7th time in just 10 races so far this year in the MN Corn Growers Super Late Model division.

 Former Raceway Park Champion Chad Walen took the early lead in the 40 lap race, he then fought side by side with former TUNDRA Champion Nick Panitzke for the top spot.  Panitzke took the lead on lap 12 before Goede made his way though the pack, on a restart Goede captured the lead and held on the final 15 laps for the win by .656 seconds.

 "Elko Speedway is the premiere facility in the country pretty much," said Goede "for two groove racing, it doesn't get any better."  Panitzke did not pass post race Tech inspection and was disqualified, Derek Lemke was then scored in second and Matt Goede third in the 19 car field.

 Jacob Goede has now taken a commanding lead in the point standings, his closest competitor is his brother Matt now 64 points behind.

 # 3 Conrad Jorgenson from Lakeville (MN) bested 18 cars and won his third feature in the last four events at Elko Speedway in the NASCAR All American series Genz-Ryan Thunder Car division.

 Brent Kane, still driving a replacement car loaned to him by Scott King, took the early lead in the 20 lap feature.  It took until half way through the race for Conrad Jorgenson to move up from his 4th row starting spot to Challenge for the lead.  Kane protected the bottom groove but Jorgenson finally took the lead with 3 laps remaining and won by 1.37 seconds.

 "It's got to be about 15 years that Brent and I have been racing against each other, it's been a lot of fun, he is a great competitor," said Jorgenson. "Everybody we race with (in the Thunder Car division) is fun and most of them are my customers (at Bros Jorgenson racing), I help a lot of guys, you can build a really nice car, not spend a fortune and have a lot of fun."

 It was 20 years ago that Conrad won his first of three Championships at Elko Speedway, he started the season with some bad luck and is not running for points this year, he mentioned that this might be his last full-time season.  "I'm building two Power Stocks for my kids to race, we might bring one of them out in the next few weeks, when they are racing I won't have time to run full-time," said Jorgenson.

Jeremy Wolff finished 9th but still leads by 8 points over Kane in the race for the Championship.

Chris Marek from Lakeville (MN) won his 7th Hiway Federal Credit Union BIG 8 feature race at Elko Speedway.  Marek started 7th in the field of 16 cars, Kyle Kirberger had the early lead, then Dylan Moore took the top spot before Marek grabbed the lead for good and won by .871 seconds over Moore and Michael Beamish.

Marek now has a 48 point lead over Ryan Kamish and 52 point lead over Moore in the race for the title.

 

 

 Taylor Goldman (video above) won her second consecutive Pepsi Power Stock Main event but, it did not come easy.  Goldman from Minnetonka (MN) had a furious battle with Tim Hollen side by side and lap after lap through most of the 20 lap feature.  The crowd was thrilled by the hard nosed driving and a roar went through the stands as Goldman crossed the line just .105 seconds ahead of Hollen.

 Tom Doten finished the feature in 5th spot out of 20 cars, he now leads Goldman by 13 points and Grant Brown by 14 points in the race for the Championship.

 Robby Carter from Burnsville (MN) beat 20 other cars and won the 20 lap Great North Legends Main event.  Matt Allen had the early lead but could not hold off Carter as he took home the trophy for the 2nd time in 2015.  Defending Champion Derek Lemke finished runner up .354 seconds behind Carter.

 Derek Lemke now leads his father Jon in the points battle, Derek has a 34 point lead over his Dad and 35 points ahead of Matt Allen who sits in third.

 Justin Schelitzche from Lester Prairie (MN) won his third Hornets feature event of the season.  Schelitzche dominated the 15 lap affair and won by an entire straight away, he finished 3.903 seconds ahead of Matt Suhl to win the race.

Justin now has a 18 point lead over the other 3 time winner Ashley Bell in the Championship points battle.

 Luke Allen from Chanhassen (MN) won the Bandoleros main event and closed to only 8 points behind Owin Giles in the race for the Championship.

Ruman Wins Trans-Am race at BIR

(Brainerd, MN)  Amy Ruman continued her strong season as she was the driver to beat in the Trans-Am Series Ryan Companies Independence Day Classic at Brainerd International Raceway.  Doug Peterson led the field to the green and managed to hold off Ruman until she took the lead on lap 5 of the 40 lap (100 mile) race.  Ruman would stretch her lead, putting all of the TA3 cars and a good majority of the TA2 cars a lap down before the only caution of the race waved just past the half-way point of the race for a stalled car on the track.

“It was a hard fought race, it was hot, it was slick, it was dirty, dusty, everything they could possibly throw at us and we came out on top”, said Ruman as she tried to catch her breath following the race.  The biggest challenge for Ruman was to get by leader Peterson early on in the race.  “I was quicker than him in a couple of turns.  He gave me room and we were side-by-side and we had a great drag to the next turn.  And I just tried to take him deep.  That offline was real slippery, I tried it earlier on and I locked up, just like he did and I doubled passed him back and after that we just took off.”

Cliff Ebben would also work his way past Peterson but could only chase Ruman as the leaders ran close as they worked the lapped traffic late in the race. “For a while I think I had something”, said Ebben following the race.  “The last six or seven laps, I was used up and I couldn’t get a hold of anything.”  Ebben would finish 3.98 seconds behind Ruman as she scored her 5^th win in 6 races in the Trans-Am series this season.  Peterson would hold on to finish 3^rd.

In the TA2 class, Dillon Machavern took home his first career win.  Polesitter Tommy Archer made his Trans-Am return after successfully overcoming prostate cancer and he led from the start.  Lapped traffic would cause problems for the veteran as he tangled with another car and spun in turn 13.  This gave the lead to Gar Robinson.  Machavern and Archer would track down Robinson as the laps ticked off.  On the last lap, Machavern would get by Robinson in turn 6 to take the lead, bringing Archer along in the dash to the checkers.  “We tried to save some tires for the end and a yellow flag and that’s what we got”, said Machavern following the race.  Archer would try to track him down, but would finish .01 seconds behind, with Robinson also close, taking home 3^rd, just .04 seconds behind race winner Machavern.

Fourth of July EVE at Elko Speedway

July 4th, 2015 - Elko, MN

 #72 Jacob Goede from Carver (MN) continued his drive for another MN Corn Growers Super Late Model Championship at Elko Speedway during the Independence Day Eve of Destruction Double feature night.

 Goede won his 6th feature in 9 races in the NASCAR Whelen All American Series racing at Elko Speedway.  Derek Lemke lead most of the 30 lap main event but Goede made his move and passed for the lead with 2 laps remaining, Goede eventually won by .719 seconds over Mark Lamoreaux who got past Lemke on the final lap.

 #27 Paul Paine from Mound (MN) won the other 30 lap Super Late Model race.  Paine started up front in the 18 car field but raced Steve Anderson side by side for 7 laps before taking control of the race.  Paine held off Anderson by .752 seconds at the finish line for his first win of the season "I figured this would be my last year racing," said 49 yr old Paine "but maybe I won't quit yet!"

 Jacob Goede started 13th and made his way up to 5th at the finish.  Goede now has a 58 point lead over Nick Panitzke in the race for the Championship.

 Two travelers joined the strong field of Super Late Models, TUNDRA Rookie of the Year Reagan May from DePere (WI) finished 13th and 16th and TUNDRA Champion Dalton Zehr from Boise (ID) finished 9th and 8th in the two feature events.

 Brent Kane from Lonsdale (MN) had a roller coaster week, he crashed out of the feature last Saturday night in the Genz-Ryan Thunder Car divsion.  He ended up in the hospital and spent much of the week nursing a concussion.  With Kanes' car beyond repair the Scott King team loaned their car to him before the races, the three time Elko Speedway Champion then took that unfamiliar car with a new Duct Taped Number 99 to victory lane.  Kane beat Eric Campbell to the finish line by 1.003 seconds to claim the win with point leader Jeremy Wolff taking third.  It was the fourth win of the season for Brent Kane.

 Conrad Jorgenson won for the 2nd week in a row in the other 20 lap Thunder Car feature.  Tina Davis lead until lap 3, then Jorgenson took off and won by an impressive 3.954 seconds.  Dillion Sellner finished 2nd with Davis in 3rd in the 16 car field.

Jeremy Wolff still leads in the Point Standings, but by only 9 points over Brent Kane.

 Dusty Mann from Farmington (MN) won for the 2nd time in the Pepsi Power Stock division, he had a great side by side battle with Tim Hollen for much of the race, Mann eventually bested the 20 car field by 1.219 seconds at the finish line in Feature number 1.

 The Second Feature was won by Taylor Goldman from Minnetonka (MN), she raced defending Champion Nick Oxborough early in the race but then extended her lead to 1.399 seconds at the finish line.  "I'm thankful that I got a win early this year, and I hope I can get some more," said Goldman "I really have to give this one to my Dad, our starter went out in the first feature, we didn't know if we could fix it, luckily my Dad had a spare one, if he wouldn't have put that starter back in we wouldn't have raced the second feature."

 Tom Doten had some bad luck and lost some of his cushion in the Point Standings, Taylor Goldman is now only 9 points back and 15 yr old Grant Brown is 11 points behind Doten.

 16 year old Matt Allen from Chanhassen (MN) won his second Great North Legends feature event.  Allen lead flag to flag and won by .459 seconds in this 20 lap and 20 car main event.  Derek Lemke finished second and moved into the point lead, he is 10 points ahead of Allen in the Standings.  Previous leader Brady Fox-Rhode did not race and moved back to 7th in the Standings.

 Matt Allen is a Type 1 Diabetic but that has not slowed his racing career one bit, he scored his first career win 3 weeks ago at Elko Speedway and was promptly congratulated by his racing idol NASCAR Xfinity driver Ryan Reed on Twitter.  Reed is also a Diabetic, the two met last year at Iowa Speedway.

 Blake Dorweiler from Montgomery (MN) won the Hornets feature event.  Dorweiler and Ashley Bell raced door to door for much of the 15 lap event, Dorweiler eventually won by .69 seconds over Bell.

 Justin Schlitzche finished 5th in the 18 car field and still holds onto the points lead, he is 20 points ahead of Bell in the race for the Championship.

 Troy Tuma won his third Hornet Figure 8 feature event, he shot low on the last lap and just got past Brian Adams for the win.

Mark Goddard in a 2006 Dodge Charger and Brian McMenomy in a 1979 Cadillac won the Spectator Drags.

 Larry and Shannon Quick from Aledo (IL) had a great competition that thrilled the capacity crowd in their two Monster Trucks.  Ghost Ryder driven by Larry won the Free Style Competition over Shannon in her truck named La Chica Loca.

The J.J. Romans Motocross stunt team took big air doing tricks 30 feet over the crowd.

 The RentMyPartyBus.com Figure 8 School Bus races were crazy as usual and were a great lead-in to the awesome Fireworks show to end the Eve of Destruction night at Elko Speedway.

Trans Am comes to Brainerd early

The Trans Am series will be racing Sunday July 5th in the Ryan Companies Independence Day Classic at Brainerd International Raceway.  This race has traditionally been held over Labor day weekend.

To preview this event, here is an interview we did with Gary Curtis, Director of the Performance driving school at BIR.

This series raced at BIR from 1969 to 1989 but then it just went away.  It was revived and brought back to BIR in 2010 and then acquired by Minnesota veteran driver Jim Derhaag who raced his 151st and final Trans Am event here in 2010.  That first race back saw only 7 cars on track and MN native Tony Ave won by 65 seconds, almost a full lap over 2nd place.

Things have changed for the better over the past 5 years, the race set for this weekend has 41 entries and the Trans Am series now has 3 different divisions all racing together.  12 drivers are entered in the top TA division sporting Corvette bodies and 800 horsepower.

 #87 Doug Peterson from Bonita Springs (FL) is a veteran driver who has won the previous two years here at BIR.

 #59 Simon Gregg from Ponte Verde (FL) is the 2012 Trans Am series Champion, but he has not won at BIR.


 #4 Paul Fix from Williamsville (NY) is 2nd in points and he is the only driver other than Ruman to win a race this year.

 #07 Jed Copham is our local Brainerd racer, plus he owns the track.  He does have a shot, nobody has more experience at this track, in 2013 he finished 5th.

 #36 Cliff Ebben from Appleton (WI) has been so close to winning here at BIR, but has come up just short.  He has had some bad luck too, including when he destroyed a car here back in 2011.


Qualifying will be Saturday July 4th at 2:20pm with the 40 lap 100 mile race on Sunday July 5th at 1:50pm, the race usually takes between 60 and 90 minutes to complete.  If the past races are any indication you can expect one or two cautions during the race.

The Brainerd International Raceway competition road course is 13 turns and 2.5 miles, I recommend trying more than one location to watch the action.  You can bring a chair or stand on the bridge, you can see the tightest and slowest corner on the track just past the pit lane and the drivers will race right underneath you.  I also recommend going into the infield and checking out the action on some of the high speed locations.  Bleachers are set up in numerous locations.  The race paddock and pit lane is also open for fans, it is a very active place during pre race and post race festivities.

The track was repaved two years ago, this Spring curbing was put in and the track work is complete.

Elko Speedway Race Story June 27 2015

June 27, 2015 - Elko, MN

 Jacob Goede from Carver (MN) continued his incredible string of great finishes in the NASCAR Whelen All American series MN Corn Growers Super Late Model division at Elko Speedway with his fifth win in seven opportunities so far in 2015.

 Goede started 7th in a field of 20, Derek Lemke lead the first half of the 40 lap feature before Billy Moen took over the top spot, Moen was then quickly swallowed up by Goede who lead for the final 14 laps of the race.  Below is the YouTube video of the Goede pass for the win..

 Goede held off veteran driver (1976 Champion) Mark Lamoreaux by .374 seconds at the finish line for the win, with Moen rounding out the top 3.  Goede now holds a 54 point lead over Nick Panitzke and 55 points over his brother Matt Goede in the standings.

 Three time Champion Conrad Jorgenson from Lakeville (MN) finally swore off his bad luck and won the Genz-Ryan Thunder Car 20 lap main event.

 Harm Alken took the early lead until point leader Jeremy Wolff took over with 15 laps to go, Conrad Jorgenson then slipped past Wolff at the half-way point and took home the hardware for his first win of 2015.  He won by 2.368 over Wolff and 4.035 seconds over Tina Davis who finished third.

 Three time Champion Brent Kane wrecked and hit the wall on lap 6, he finished 13th and went to the hospital for observation, Kane remains second in the point standings, 10 points behind Jeremy Wolff.

 The Pepsi Power Stock main event was full of drama from start to finish.  In the end it was Dusty Mann from Farmington (MN) declared the winner.  Mann lead most of the 20 lap race but ran out of fuel on the last lap, was passed by Nick Oxborough and crossed the line second.  "The car was running out of gas for four laps before the end, I started swerving, trying to slosh the fuel around in the tank just hoping to hang on," said Mann "once we were out of gas, there wasn't much I could do but just coast."

 Defending Champion Oxborough and his fans were jubilant in victory lane with the dramatic last lap win but that all changed when he was disqualified after post race inspection.  "Nick came up to me in the tech barn (before inspection) and said that he hates to win one that way and we shook hands," said Mann "then ten minutes later he ended up getting DQ'd and I ended up going back to him and saying that I hate to win one that way."

 "It was a great night overall for us, I want to thank Paul Hamilton and his crew for letting me race his spare car, I just like to have fun for as long as they will let me do it," said Mann.  The results don't lie, Mann won the feature and became the sixth different winner in 8 races so far in 2015.  Taylor Goldman scored a second place finish and point leader Tom Doten was credited with third, now he has a 26 point lead over Cole Neisius and 28 points over Goldman in the standings.

 Defending Champion Chris Marek from Lakeville (MN) won another Hiway Federal Credit Untion BIG 8 Late Model feature event at Elko Speedway.  Marek edged Michael Ostdiek by 1.065 seconds at the finish line of this 25 lap event to win his 6th trophy in 9 races so far in 2015.  Marek now has a 44 point lead over both Ryan Kamish and Dylan Moore in the standings.

 Brady Fox-Rhode from Loretto (MN) has lead the point standings all year in the Great North Legends but has not won since week two of the season.  That changed with a win on Saturday night at Elko Speedway.  Fox-Rhode passed Robby Carter with 7 laps to go and held off Jaycen Brockhouse by only .130 seconds at the line to take the victory.

23 cars started the 20 main event and everyone finished on the lead lap with the exception of Matt Ostdiek who hit the wall hard in corner number four, did major damage to his car and did not finish the race.  This is a very evenly matched division with five different winners in seven races so far in 2015.  Brady Fox-Rhode has a 12 point lead over Derek Lemke in the standings.

 Alex Vincent from Owatonna (MN) won his first ever Hornets feature event at Elko Speedway and he had to hold off the current point leader Justin Schelitzche for the win, "It was a little nerve-wracking I knew it would be hard to stay in front of him, so I just ran my line and stayed out front, it was fun" said Vincent.  This is the third year of racing for Vincent and it was his first win, "it's great, my family has put in a lot of time and working hard on the car and the hard work is starting to pay off, it feels good" said Vincent.

Schelitzche now has a 24 point lead over Ashley Bell in the Hornets point standings.

 The new Hornets Figure 8 division ran two exciting 15 lap feature events.  Troy Tuma (photo below) from Waseca (MN) won the first race and newlywed Dan McCarthy from Bloomington (MN) won the second.  Both features were full of close calls and near collisions in the "X," Brian Adams drove Brandon Olsons' car to a second place finish in both the races.

 12 year old Owin Giles from New Market (MN) won his 3rd feature of the year in the Bandolero division.  Giles holds a 27 point lead over Luke Allen in the standings.

Scott Kingery night at Elko Speedway

Jacob Goede from Carver (MN) won his fourth MN Corn Growers Super Late Model feature of 2015 at Elko Speedway.

Goede started up front and never looked back, he bested the 23 car field for the entire 40 laps in the NASCAR Whelen All American series, he finished just in front of 9 time Champion Donny Reuvers by 1.127 seconds at the line.  Jacobs' younger brother Matt Goede started seventh and moved up to third.

Defending Champion Jacob Goede now has a 21 point lead over Donny Reuvers in the point standings.

Ted Reuvers from Dundas (MN) won the 3rd annual Scott Kingery memorial Thunder Car race at Elko Speedway.

The past two winners of this event both had problems that prevented them from being a factor at the end of the race.  Defending winner Conrad Jorgenson only completed 18 laps in the 40 lap feature, he dropped out with mechanical problems and finished 23rd. 

Inaugural winner Brent Kane ended up with a flat tire and had to pit causing him to finish 21st.  "We did have a little bit of contact," said Reuvers "I guess I don't know if I caused that (flat tire) to Brent, if so, I am sorry, that's racing."

Dusty Mann lead the 24 car field of Genz-Ryan Thunder Cars to the green, he lead early in the race and then had a great battle with Reuvers for the top spot.  "Dusty is a good hard racer and nobody wrecked so that is what counts," said Reuvers who finally got past Mann on a restart with 14 laps to go.

Dillion Sellner started 11th and raced his way up to 2nd, he finished .835 seconds out of the lead, the Great Northern Sportsman Series Champion Devin Schmidt ended up third and Dusty Mann came home fourth.

This race is in honor of Scott Kingery a former racer and car owner at Elko Speedway who died of cancer.  His wife and family was in attendance and actively participated in all aspects of the race night, "Scott was out here (at Elko Speedway) for as long as I can remember," said Reuvers "it's a tough deal, but his memory keeps going."

With a 13th place finish Jeremy Wolff now has a 6 point advantage over Brent Kane in the Point standings.

Two former Jefferson Speedway (WI) Champions made the 4 hour 30 minute trip up to Elko Speedway to compete in the race.  Jason Thoma blew a motor in practice and never started the feature and Mark Deporter finished on the lead lap in 14th, 7.293 seconds behind Reuvers.

Lawrence Berthiaume from Albertville (MN) won the Hiway Federal Credit Union BIG 8 feature event.

Jon Lemke and Ryan Kamish had a furious side by side battle for the lead until lap 7 when Berthiaume passed them both on the low side in corner number two, "I just closed my eyes and made the pass," said Berthiaume jokingly "these wins are hard to come by."

Berthiaume took the lead and increased it as the race went on, he finished 1.715 seconds ahead of Kamish with Dylan Moore 2.215 seconds behind.

Chris Marek who is the Defending BIG 8 Champion and 5 time winner this year started 8th and worked his way up to 4th during the 25 lap main event.  Marek has a 38 point lead over Dylan Moore in the standings.

Matt Ryan from New Market (MN) won the Pepsi Power Stock 20 lap feature.  Ryan lead the race from flag to flag but had to hold on the last five laps when his power steering was failing.

Ryan finished just ahead of Joey Prusak by .281 seconds at the finish line, Taylor Goldman got third and 14 yr old Grant Brown finished 4th in the 20 car main event. 

Tom Doten finished 7th in the race and holds onto a 19 point lead over defending Champion Nick Oxborough in the standings, Grant Brown is 22 points out of the lead.

Robby Carter from Burnsville (MN) was the best of the 23 cars in the Great North Legends 20 lap feature.  Carter lead all the laps but was pressured by previous winners Matt Allen and Brady Fox-Rhode, Ted Hough finished a season high fourth place.

Brady Fox-Rhode holds a 15 point lead over both Matt Allen and Derek Lemke in the Standings.

Ashley Bell from Lester Prairie (MN) won her 3rd feature of 2015 at Elko Speedway in the Hornets division.  Bell finished ahead of Brandon Plekkenpol by .257 seconds at the finish line, front row starters Michael Weiss and Chandler Ulrich finished third and fourth.  The Hornets car counts have been very good this year, 19 cars started the main event. 

Ashley Bell is now 25 points behind Justin Schelitzche in the race for the Point Championship.

11 year old Coy Wulf from Lakeville (MN) won his first ever Bandoleros feature event, he finished just ahead of a hard charging Owin Giles for the win.

A night at Princeton Speedway

Princeton Speedway races on Friday nights at 7pm.  It is a unique 1/4 mile high banked "bull ring" style dirt track just 30 minutes North of the Twin Cities on Hwy 169.  It is a fairgrounds type facility with aluminum bleacher seating.  The track has been in operation since 1956.

The track surface is very good, no rocks, it stays tacky and does not lose moisture as quickly as some Minnesota tracks.  The corners are banked very nicely creating a fast top groove on the cushion, even the back stretch is banked.  Some nights the middle groove gets dry slick making the very low and flat bottom groove the fast way around.

Once per year Princeton Speedway gives away bikes to young race fans and parks all the race cars on the front stretch during intermission, they open their gates and do a driver meet and greet with all the fans.  It was very well received.  The crowd seems pretty laid back and relaxed.

The track runs 6 divisions of cars and averages between 60-80 cars per night, on special occasions they also race Sprint Cars.  Their regular divisions are IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Mods, Super Stocks, Mod 4's, Street Stocks and IMCA Sport Compacts.

The cars line up in the pits and enter the track from behind corner four.

Eve of Destruction

It was a very explosive Saturday night Eve of Destruction at Elko Speedway with great racing in the NASCAR Whelen All American series and lots of destruction after the racing was complete.

Chris Marek from Lakeville (MN) continued his great 2015 season with another win in the Hiway Federal Credit Union BIG 8 Late Model division, Marek has taken home the trophy in 5 of the first 6 races of the season.  Dylan Moore finished 2nd place by 1.452 seconds and Michael Ostdiek finished third place in feature number one.

 
The field was inverted for the second feature and veteran driver Jon Lemke took home the trophy.  "It feels good to get the first win out of the way," said Lemke "the BIG 8's are a tough class, anyone can win on any given night," said Lemke "these cars are fun to drive, the 8 inch tire can really be a challenge."

Marek moved his way up from the back of the pack in feature number two to finish in the third position, right behind Ryan Kamish who lost to Lemke by only .611 seconds.

Marek extended his point lead to 32 points over Dylan Moore in the standings.

Jeremy Wolff from Chaska (MN) won feature number one in the Genz-Ryan Thunder Car divison.  Wolff beat out Conrad Jorgenson by .359 seconds with Harm Alken closely following in third place.  This was the second win of the year from Wolff.

Brent Kane from Lonsdale (MN) won the second feature of the night, he shot to the front on a green-white-checkered finish and beat Adam Wiebusch by .734 seconds at the stripe.  That is the third win of the season for Kane.

Jeremy Wolff is in a great battle with Kane for the lead in the point standings.  Wolff leads Kane by only 3 points.

Tom Doten from St Paul (MN) won the first Pepsi Power Stock main event.  Doten started up front and never looked back, he won by 1.111 seconds over Shawn Grabinger.  "I've been here since the early 1990's, it's fun, it's my adrenalin,"said Doten "it's actually my sobriety, I've been clean and sober for over 13 years now."

Paul Neisius from Hastings (MN) won the second Power Stock main event, he held off defending Champion Nick Oxborough by 1.724 seconds at the finish line.  This was the first win of the season for Paul, his son Cole Neisius won on opening night.

Tom Doten raced years ago when Power Stocks struggled to get a good car count at Elko Speedway.  Now the field is large every week, 22 cars raced on Saturday night,"this is a great class with lots of great guys to race with" said Doten.  Doten has taken the point lead by 17 points over Oxborough in the standings.

2009 Champion Jaycen Brockhouse from Savage (MN) won the Great North Legends main event.  Brockhouse passed Brady Fox-Rhode late in the race and held on for the win by .367 seconds.  Last weeks' winner Matt Allen finished third followed by Jaycens' dad Tim Brockhouse in fourth.

A strong field of twenty two cars raced in the 1250cc motorcycle motor powered race cars in the Legends divsion.  Brockhouse is the fourth different winner in the five races so far in 2015.  Rhode is the point leader by 10 over Allen, with Derek Lemke in third only 12 points out.

Justin Schelitzche from Lester Prairie (MN) won for the second week in a row in the Hornets division.  Schelitzche took advantage of a late restart to pass Alex Vincent for the win by .297 seconds. 

Schelitzche is also the point leader with a 27 point advantage over Ashley Bell in the standings.

After the racing the crowd was entertained by two incredible stunts.  In the first time back since recovering from a injury, Jennifer Schneider better know as Cannon Lady, was shot out of a cannon over 127 feet through the air into a net.  Her husband Radical Rob cut short his stunt man career to travel with Jennifer and perform his TNT stunt, he enters a box and blows himself up with a stick of dynamite. 

 

 Both stunts were performed flawlessly and the Eve of Destruction crowd was not disappointed.,

Doug Rose then thrilled the crowd with his 11 time National Championship Jet car named the Green Mamba.  He melted two junk cars down to the ground with his J46 Jet engine powered drag car.  See video below.

Elko Speedway Race Story 6/6/2015

The rain held off just long enough for the packed house to enjoy the entire NASCAR Whelen All American series race program on MN Corn Growers Tasseldega nights at Elko Speedway.


Nine time Champion Donny Reuvers from Dundas (MN) won the 40 lap MN Corn Growers Super Late Model feature event.  He fought off challenges from defending Champion Jacob Goede who was pressuring him from below "the bottom is so tough to get by, you can only run about 4 or 5 laps down there before you have to cool your tires down," said Reuvers.  Goede eventually slipped back to fourth and Nick Murgic charged to the front and had a great battle with Reuvers, "Nick is a good driver" said Reuvers "you never have to worry about him sliding up and hitting you, it's fun to race hard like that."

Reuvers did win by the slightest of margains, only .143 seconds at the finish line, Murgic finished second with Matt Goede finishing just ahead of his brother Jacob Goede in this 20 car field of Super Late Models in the NASCAR Whelen All American series.

This was the first win at Elko Speedway in two years for Reuvers who has spent some time racing regional touring series recently "it's nice to travel just twenty minutes and be at the race track, especially tonight with how many fans were here," said Reuvers.

Two time defending Champion Chris Marek from Lakeville (MN) won the Hiway Federal Credit Union BIG 8 feature event.  It took a last lap pass for Marek to edge Michael Ostdiek by only .030 seconds at the finish line.  Ostdiek, the 2013 Elko Speedway Driver of the Year, was the fastest in qualifying and lead most of the 25 lap feature event, but he dropped to second by only a couple feet on the last lap.  Ryan Kamish lead early in the race and finished third with Joe Neisus coming across fourth in the sixteen car field.

Its the fourth win in five events for Chris Marek in the BIG 8 division so far in 2015.

Jeremy Wolff from Chaska (MN) won his first Genz-Ryan Thunder Car main event of 2015.  Wolff and Tina Davis thrilled the crowd by racing wheel to wheel for half of the 20 lap feature before he finally pulled away and won by 1.759 seconds at the finish line.

Davis finished second in the 19 car field with Michael Gilomen a very close third and three time Champion Brent Kane in fourth.

 

 

 

Sixteen year old Matt Allen from Chanhassen (MN) won his first ever Great North Legends feature event on Saturday night, "It felt amazing" said Allen "I've thought about this feeling for quite a while, it's hard work but awesome."  Allen beat out Derek Lemke by 2.4 seconds with Will McCully finishing third and Shon Jacobsen fourth.

Allen has type 1 diabetes but he has not let it slow his racing career, after some advice from his NASCAR idol Ryan Reed, whom he met at Iowa Speedway last year, he now wears a continuous Glucose monitor to make sure his blood sugar level is OK and in range at all times, he also has a sugar drink in his race car just in case his blood sugar gets low.

Matt Allen races against his father Bruce who finished the race 10th out of the 23 cars in the Legends race.  His younger brother Luke also races at Elko Speedway and is a winner in the Bandolero divison.

Fourteen year old Grant Brown won his second Pepsi Power Stock main event.  Brandon Peterson and Cole Neisius got together while battling for the lead and that opened up the door for Brown who started seventh in the twenty car field.

Once Brown got the lead he had to fight back the many challenges of Dustin Mann to win by .311 seconds at the finish line.  Defending Champion Nick Oxborough finished third and last weeks' winner Tom Doten got fourth.

 

 

Justin Schelitzche from Lester Prairie won the Hornets feature.  Schelitzche is a many time winner at Elko Speedway and a former Flag Pole race Champion.  Alex Vincent finished second 3.405 seconds behind at the finish line and two time winner Ridge Oien finished third in the 16 car field.

Twelve year old Owin Giles from New Market (MN) won the Bandoleros main event passing his main rival Luke Allen on the bottom side of the track, its the second win of the season for Giles.

Up next at Elko Speedway is an Eve of Destruction event on Saturday June 13th.  In addition to the racing fans can see a woman being shot out of a cannon and a man being blown up by a stick of dynamite, also School Bus races, spectator drags and Doug Rose will drive his 12 time National Champion Jet drag racer the Green Mamba and melt a car down to the ground.  An Elko Drive-in Movie will begin 15 minutes after the races are over.  Gates open at 5pm and action begins at 6pm.
