2009 Speedtalk MN Driver of the year

Adam Royle wins 2009 Speedtalk MN Driver of the year

December 31 2009

Northfield MN driver Adam Royle says his seventh year in a Super Late Model was "my best season, so far."

In 2009 Adam had an incredibly consistent year, he won seven feature races and his second straight point championship at Raceway Park in Shakopee MN. He also won seven features at Elko Speedway in Elko MN and was leading in the points before the "Chase" format at the end of the season, he finished third in the point standings.

He was also awarded the 2009 MN State NASCAR Whelen All-American series championship.

It takes a team effort to succeed at the race track. Brian Johnson and Adam's father Jarry Royle did a great job in the pits turning wrenches, and for the most part, the driver stayed out of the big wreck in 2009. "That way we can work on making the car faster, instead of just fixing it," said Adam.

The most memorable moment of 2009, according to Royle, was when he won the Dwain Behrens memorial race for the second time in his career. Adam grew up at the track watching Behrens race, and winning on that night means a lot to him.

Why change when things are going well? Royal says his 2010 plans are much the same as 2009. Race full-time at both Elko Speedway and Raceway Park along with running some ASA Midwest tour events.

Dean Reller winner of Allmendinger Cup

It couldn't have been closer at the finish. With Jimmie Johnson scoring a 5th place finish at Homestead and Jeff Gordon sixth. Dean Reller picked up one point and tie Jordan Bianchi in the standings.

It went down to the tie-breaker .. Jimmie won the NASCAR point title by 141 pts and Dean was closer to that prediction than Jordan so, by the closest margain, Dean wins the AJ Allmendinger car.

Thanks all you fans for following along with our competition this year.

Kelly Bires interview on Trackside

Kelly Bires won an ASA Late Model race at Elko a few years ago, a race Dean and Jason broadcast on KRWC. He will be driving in the Nationwide series for Dale Earnhardt Jr in 2010.

Here is an interview with Kelly on Trackside

http://www.nascar.com/video/cup/2009/11/21/cup.hom.speed.trackside.nascar/index.html

Drama at Homestead

Its come down to the final race of the Chase in our weekly fantasy NASCAR competition, the prize is an awesome limited edition 1/24th die-cast of AJ Allmendinger.

Jordan leads Dean by just one point going into the season finale at Homestead FL.

Jordan gets first choice, and it was a tough 0ne. He thought about picking a Roush driver: Kenseth, Biffle or Edwards because of the Roush domination at Homestead in the past. He is going with JEFF GORDON, who has never won at Homestead (the only track on the schedule in which he is winless). He has run very well there though, he has five "top 5" finishes there in the last seven races.

The pressure is now on Dean, who needs to beat Jordan by two positions to win our competition, or one position to tie.

Dean is going with JIMMIE JOHNSON this weekend. Jimmie has only 2 "top 5" finishes at Homestead in the past, but he was very fast in practice and starts on the the pole position.

Dean thinks Jimmie will go for the win and capture his fourth straight NASCAR championship. Jimmie has been Dean's go-to guy this year, so he will go to the well one more time.

Jason is out of contention for the Allmendinger cup this year, but is looking to end the season with a winner. He picks JUAN PABLO MONTOYA to pick up his first ever oval track win at his current hometown of Homstead FL.

Juan Pablo lead a couple laps there last year and has improved at intermediate tracks in 2009. He was fast in practice and wants to win in front of his biggest group of fans this weekend.

In case Dean and Jordan tie after the race on Sunday, we dont want to cut the car in half so, we needed a tie breaker. It will be the final winning POINT DIFFERENCE between the champion and second place.

Jimmie Johnson currently has a 108 pt lead over Mark Martin and just needs to finish 25th place to clinch the championship.

Jordan thinks that Jimmie will lose some points and his winning margain will only be only 85pts. Dean takes the opposite position and thinks that Jimmie will increase his point lead over Mark Martin and win the championship by 160pts. If they tie, the one who is closer to the actual margain will win the car.

Allmendinger Cup Finale weekend

The three of us have been in a competition for the "AJ Allmendinger die cast" all year long, now it comes down to the final weekend at Homestead.

Jordan picked Denny Hamlin at Phoenix and scored 3 pts. Dean got the winner right, Jimmie Johnson and took home 5 pts. Jason went with Mark Martin, who finished 4th, and added 2 pts to his total.

Point standings going into the final race look like this. Jordan 25, Dean 24, Jason 17.

So that means the pressure is on for Jordan and Dean, they are just one point apart. We will have them not only pick a driver for the NASCAR finale, but also guess a point total that they think will be the margin of victory for the Sprint Cup champion on Sunday. That will be the tie-breaker if they end in a draw.

Picks will be posted by Noon on Saturday.

Jordan posted a couple interesting articles on his web-site this week. www.theracinggeek.com

All race fans are invited to see former KFAN Motorsports host Chris Hawkey and his band Friday night at the Lookout bar and grill in Maple Grove, beginning at 9pm. See you there!

Wissota Expo 2009

WISSOTA Expo 2009

By Dean Reller

St Cloud, MN (November 14 2009) - Racer's from all over the midwest converged at the St Cloud civic center for the 2009 WISSOTA Expo. The expo featured seminars on everything from race car set up, to driving techniques.

The most popular event was the trade show with many racing products on display and for sale. The booth with the most interest seemed to be the full sized Modified racing simulator. Aspiring racers sat in an actual Modified and turned laps in a simulated race, while the car responded just as it would on the track.

Following the expo, the WISSOTA National Awards Banquet was set to cap off the two-day gathering of race track racers and operators.

Phoenix NASCAR picks

With 22pts Jordan is still the leader in our "race for the Allmendinger cup." He gets first choice.... and the winner is.... DENNY HAMLIN.

Jordan thinks the Phoenix track fits his flat-track driving style, and even though he has never won there, he has and average finish of 6th in the last last six races at Phoenix.

for a full-field rundown go to Jordan's site http://www.theracinggeek.com/

Dean is still in second place with 19pts. He thinks JIMMIE JOHNSON will put his name in the history books by wrapping up his fourth championship and win the race at Phoenix.

Also watch out for Kyle Busch, Mark Martin and Tony Stewart

Jason is in last place in the point standings with 15pts. He will take MARK MARTIN to win at Phoenix. Mark has 2 wins there, including last spring. In the last 9 races at Phoenix he is second to only Jimmie Johnson in laps lead, and has an average finish of 9.9 (second best again to Jimmie).

If Mark gets maximum points at Phoenix and Jimmie finishes 15th or worse, we will have a new leader going to Homestead... It could happen!

Jeff Burton and Marcos Ambrose are sleepers in the desert.

NASCAR at Texas

Point leader Jimmie Johnson tangled with Sam Hornish Jr early in the race and finished 38th.

Mark Martin scored a fourth place finish at Texas and moved to within 73pts of Johnson in points.

Only two more races remain in the Chase for the Cup. This Sunday is Phoenix, a strong track for Mark Martin who took home a win there last spring.

PICKS for the Texas race

Jordan is the leader in our competition for the AJ Allmindinger Cup with 22pts .. so he is up first.

He picks Greg Biffle... Biffle has won at least one race since 2003, Jordan thinks that streak will continue after the #16 car scores a win at Texas.

Biffle won there in 2005 and has scored consecutive top 5 finishes at Texas.
For more NASCAR info click on this site http://www.theracinggeek.com/

Dean is second with 19 pts

He is going to pick Jeff Gordon... Dean thinks the #24 will win after knocking at the door the last few weeks.

Dean mentioned that Carl Edwards is the first driver who comes to mind when he thinks of Texas because of the way he has been running in the Nationwide series but, his Cup season has been a big disapointment.

He thinks Jimmie Johnson will play it cool because of his big points lead, maybe scoring another top 5 finish.

Other drivers to watch include: Mark Martin, Tony Stewart and Kasey Kahne.

Jason is in last place with 15 pts an gets to pick last.

I will take the obvious pick, NASCAR Sprint Cup point leader Jimmie Johnson.

The #48 car has one win and 6 "top 5" finishes in his 12 starts at Texas.

Jimmie looked great in both practice sessions even though his teammates struggled. I am convinced this is a blessed season for Jimmie and Chad and they can do nothing wrong.

Tuesday, November 3, 2009

Want to sponsor a Cup car for $20?

You can sponsor the #08 car driven by Terry Labonte at the NASCAR Homestead FL race for just $20. You will get your name on the hood (written VERY small) and the chance to vote for the paint scheme.

Saturday Oct 17th Ross Kenseth Wrap-up

Ross Kenseth was a good interview .. Here are a few tid-bits from the interveiw: We found out he does not have a plan for next years racing yet but he wants to race a Super Late Model .... He does not have a development contract with any NASCAR team... His number is 25 because his dad Matt is number 17 now and number 8 in the past, you add 17 + 8 = 25 and his birthday is on the 25th .... He is currently in High School basketball practice and hopes to be a starter this year, he is up to 6' 2" tall now. He would like to go to college someday.

Super Late Model driver Neil Knuth of Monticello, MN passed away on Tuesday September 22nd. Knuth traveled from South Dakota to race Modifieds at the Fergus Falls Raceway for several years. He would later move to Monticello and continued to make the trek to Fergus Falls nearly every week. Eventually he switched to a Super Late Model that he raced at the Fergus Falls Raceway and the I-94 Raceway in Sauk Centre. Neil is best remembered for his love of racing and the sportsmanship that he extended to all his fellow competitors and his fans.

Speedtalk Sep 12th wrap-up

Denny Hamlin won the NASCAR race in front of his home-town crowd in Richmond VA Saturday night.

Kyle Busch just missed the chase and finshed 13th in points, Brian Vickers had a strong showing and moved up to 12th place in points, he makes the chase for the first time. Matt Kenseth never got it going on Saturday night, he had a bad night at the wrong time and fell out of the chase.

Carl Edwards won the Nationwide race on Friday night

Danica to Nascar in 2010.

Tony Stewart has said that Danica told him that NASCAR is "what she wants to do." Sounds like she will re-sign with her IRL team for next year and run a limited schedule of NASCAR Nationwide series & Camping world Truck series races in 2010 with a long-term goal of racing full-time in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series.

Who she will race for has not been announced yet, Stewart-Haas racing seems to be the favorite to supply her Sprint Cup cars but she will need to align herself with a different team to race in the NASCAR Nationwide or Truck series.

Details will be announced soon... here is an article from this summer that sums up my views on Danica coming to NASCAR. I have no doubt that she will have sucess after 10-15 starts when she gets the feel of the much heavier stock-cars.

June 30 2009.. by Jason D Searcy (speedtalkon1360.com)
Danica to NASCAR in 2010?
I think Danica Patrick will be racing in the NASCAR Sprint cup series in 2010, most likely for Hendrick Motorsports. It just makes too much financial sense.Strike while the iron is hot! Danica Patrick is at the peak of her INDY Car career.. now is the time to move.

According to Forbes.com, Danica earned only $7 million in 2008. That does not even compare to the $35 million Dale Jr made or even the $30 million Jeff Gord0n pulled in driving for Hendrick Motorsports. Danica will NEVER make that kind of money driving in the INDY Car series. Why do you think Juan Pablo Montoya, Sam Hornish, Patrick Carpentier, Dario Franchitti and even AJ Allmendinger moved from Indy Cars to NASCAR? Because the pay was better. You say that Hendrick Motorsports doesnt have a spot open. Maybe Dale Jr will start up his own Hendrick satellite team like Tony Stewart did this year, and that would open up a spot to bring Danica into the best equipment and crew money can buy.Hendrick can lure Go Daddy and other sponsors into paying top-price ad rates on her car plus all the added publicity that would go with it.

Would she race in NASCAR Sprint cup in 2010? You bet she would. Race as many NASCAR Truck series and NASCAR Nationwide series races as possible this year after the INDY Car series is over, drive a Cup car a couple times the end of the 2009 season and then start her full-time in a Sprint Cup car in 2010.I think it makes too much dollars and sense not to.

Local racers in the hospital

A couple local racers are in the hospital this week. Many time 4 cyl champ Mike Dimmick #82 had a big wreck last Saturday at Elko. He suffered a broken right foot and was in the hospital for surgery on Friday Aug 28th. They inserted a rod into his foot and he will have to stay off his feet for 6-8 weeks .. so that means no more racing in 2009 for him.

ASA Midwest tour driver Josh Vadnais #11, #36 .. had an emergency procedure to remove his appendix late Thursday night and is recovering in the hospital on Friday Aug 28th.

Get well soon guys!

Reuvers wins Shakopee 100

Donny Reuvers started third row outside but moved to the lead on lap 9 to win the Shakopee 100 ASA midwest tour race at Raceway Park on Sunday night.

Steve Carlson followed Bryan Roach on the low-side after an early caution, that opened the door for Reuvers who used the high side to take the top spot. Carlson stayed on Reuvers tail the rest of the race, Donny even brushed the wall on lap 69 while passing a lapped car but held on for the win at his home track.

Unofficially Chris Wimmer finished third followed by Jeff Storm, Jamie Farrel, Nick Nevell and Nathan Haseleu.

We will broadcast interviews with the top 3 finishers on the Saturday Aug 22nd Speedtalk program, plus a bonus interview with tour announcer Matt Panure.

Brian Vickers won the Michigan NASCAR race when Jimmie Johnson ran out of gas (again). Jeff Gordon finished second and Dale Jr in third.

Racing's small rewards can be biggest victory

By Dean Reller

SHAKOPEE, MN (August 15, 2009) - I’ll be the first to admit that I am NOT a racecar driver, but as a longtime fan, race official and media member I have a true appreciation for the skills of any driver who takes to the track. Case in point, I was invited to a special race between ASA Midwest Tour Officials, all of which are very good friends of mine at Raceway Park in Shakopee.

Over the years I have gotten a chance to jump behind the wheel of a racecar and take it around the track or in my case, attempt to take it around the track without ending up in a heap against the wall. My first learning experience of the day was after I climbed behind the wheel of my car. The challenge was to put on my seat belts. Unlike your street car, buckling up involves a little more than just one click. A racecar has five belts that surround you from every angle, virtually eliminating any chance of moving in or out of seat. This of course is all in the name of safety, with comfort not really anything to be considered. In my previous racing endeavors, I always struggled to connect each of the belts in the proper order, nonetheless get them to the required tightness of making me feel like I have become actually part of the car. The stars must have been aligned correctly, because I got all hooked up and in a record time to boot.

Now it was time to take to the track. I was last in line to go out, which was OK, because that gave me an opportunity to maybe make a pass. With the green flag out, I was off and running. The first couple of laps I was just trying to feel out the car, braking going into the turns, letting it roll a bit, before getting back into the throttle. I know that the best place to be at Raceway Park was to be as low as you can on the track, after all that’s the shortest way around, not to mention where everyone usually is on any given race night.

I made a couple of passes and felt like things were going really good. Meanwhile, ASA Midwest Tour Vice President Steve Einhaus and ASA Midwest Tour Race Director Eric Peterson were motoring around at a pretty good clip and soon they came up on me. I heard them coming and so I let Steve by and it wasn’t long before Eric came flying by as well. That’s when I thought maybe if I follow Eric I could pick up some speed. That was a BIG mistake. While going into turn three, I came in faster than normal and then started to jump on the gas a little harder and faster than I had before. This was the recipe for disaster as I lost control, slid over the rumble strips and then went into the dirt in the infield. Without stopping, my goal was to get right back onto the track. It sounded like a good plan, but the rumble strips don’t allow you to get back on the track as easily as you got off it. Somehow I managed to get back onto the track, but I soon realized that the proper, safer and much less bumpy way to get going is to drive on the grass and blend back in on the straightaway. (Now I know why the drivers do that.) With that behind me, our first mini-race was done and we all pulled into the pits, only to go at it again a few minutes later.

Instead of starting last, I started near the front which actually gave me the potential of running in front. When the green waved I carefully pulled off a pass and found myself in second, which looked promising, but I knew that the speedsters from before would be soon coming up on me. Now as I mentioned earlier, the bottom groove at Raceway Park is where most people run so in order to pass, you have to make the high groove work. By this time, I noticed someone was working on my low side, so I decided to let the car ride up a bit and give the top groove a try. That was a Really BIG mistake. As I slid to the top, at least four cars and possibly somebody’s Grandma took advantage of the opening as I was shuffled right out of the way. As soon as I saw an opening, I got my car back down to the bottom as fast as I could. Donny Reuvers and most recently Adam Royle have found a way to make the high groove work and I have an even greater respect for those drivers as I got a little taste of how hard it is to run up there. Once I got settled back on the bottom I was able to track down the car in front of me, but ran out of time to try and make a pass.

As I wheeled into the pits, I thought at least I didn’t hit the wall and nobody ran into me, so all in all it was not only a learning experience, but it was a big rush as well. Even though I didn’t finish first, second or even fifth, I feel as though I walked away a winner. Why you may wonder? Well, the things I learned on the track helped me to better gain insight as to what transpires during a race. With that info, I can better paint the picture as I go about my business of writing and reporting about the races that I cover. That to me is more of a Victory than finishing first in any race.

I’d like to thank the ASA Midwest Tour Officials and the staff of Raceway Park, for allowing me the chance to race. I highly recommend any race fan to get the real life experience of driving one of the Track Cars at Raceway Park, it is well worth it.

Danica to NASCAR in 2010?

I think Danica Patrick will be racing in the NASCAR Sprint cup series in 2010, most likely for Hendrick Motorsports. It just makes too much financial sense.

Strike while the iron is hot!

Maybe Dale Jr will start up his own Hendrick satellite team like Tony Stewart did this year, and that would open up a spot to bring Danica into the best equipment and crew money can buy.

Hendrick can lure Go Daddy and other sponsors into paying top-price ad rates on her car plus all the added publicity that would go with it.

Would she race in NASCAR Sprint cup in 2010? You bet she would. Race as many NASCAR Truck series and NASCAR Nationwide series races as possible this year after the INDY Car series is over, drive a Cup car a couple times the end of the 2009 season and then start her full-time in a Sprint Cup car in 2010.

I think it makes too much dollars and sense not to.

Bill Weber suspended by TNT

TNT announcer Bill Weber was suspended for the race at New Hampshire on Sunday by TNT. The network is not commenting at this time if Weber will be back for the Daytona race. It sounds like there was a loud public incident at the hotel where the crew was staying in New Hampshire. Weber is known to have a very controlling personality, so its not shocking that he might be easily upset, but this must have gone way over the line ... more details soon.

June 27th show Wrap-up

This week's NASCAR picks... Both Jordan and Jason took Denny Hamlin and Dean took Jimmie Johnson. Jordan thinks Danica should stay with the INDY Cars and she would not succeed right away in NASCAR, Jason thinks she should sign with a Hendrick/Stewart team or RCR team, run some Nationwide races at the end of 2009 and start full-time in NASCAR in 2010 and be just as good as anyone on the track.

ASA Midwest tour winner Jacob Goede did a great interview talking about his Illiana win mentioning he broke a starter in practice and got limited time on the track, and that he was surprised to be able to pass both Danny Fredrickson and Steve Carlson for the win (not too shabby). Even though he missed the feature at the Dells race last month, he plans on racing the ASA Midwest tour full-time, he said this is the best field of cars he has ever raced against. Jacob also mentioned that his favorite tracks to race are Iowa Speedway and Bristol Motor Speedway and his least favorite is Raceway Park in Shakopee, where he always has a tough time.

Dan Plan gave us all the local racing news from both dirt and asphalt.

I-94 Speedway is installing an additional new cable around the track (connecting the fence posts), responding to the concern by some of the drivers that they might go through the fence.

NO MORE CONFLICTS... our show will air from 11-noon the rest of the year!

Speedtalk June 20th

NASCAR picks... Jordan took Kyle Busch, Dean chose Smoke and Jason took Juan Pablo Montoya.

We interviewed Modified super-star Shane Sabraski from Rice and Legends car winner Michael Dick from St Michael.

I was surprised to see that the MW mods were about a 1/2 second slower on the dirt than asphalt (they run higher on the track) and the Legends cars were over a second slower on the dirt.

The Big Mods and Late Models are awesome on the newly dirt-ed I-94 Speedway in Sauk Centre, they just need a few more of them on Friday nights.

Dan Plan joined us live from Cedar Lake Speedway.

Our show is a bit early on June 27th..... because of the Twins game... we will be on from about 10:30am-11:30am
